Teaching statement
The continuous development of my teaching practice is a central component of my professional identity. Since 2006, I have contributed to high school, undergraduate and graduate education. Since 2014, I have been engaged at the University of Bern as a tutor, teaching assistant, course coordinator and lecturer. I have designed, implemented and evaluated lecture series and laboratory courses, placing particular emphasis on structured concept development, clear learning objectives and competence-oriented assessment.
My teaching philosophy is grounded in clarity, coherence and intellectual rigour, while ensuring accessibility for students with diverse academic backgrounds. I regularly integrate case-based learning, formative assessment strategies and interactive elements to foster active engagement and long-term understanding. I have supervised more than twenty Bachelor’s and Master’s research projects and view mentorship as an essential component of academic development, placing individual growth at the centre of scientific training.
To continuously refine my pedagogical approach, I completed a Certificate of Advanced Studies in Higher Education Teaching at the University of Bern in 2024. In the same year, following my Habilitation, I was granted the title of Privatdozent (Lecturer). In 2025, I was awarded the “Teacher of the Year” prize by students of the Department of Biology.
To further expand my expertise across educational levels, I am currently completing the Teaching Diploma for Upper Secondary Education (Biology) at the Bern University of Teacher Education (PHBern), with a focus on subject-specific didactics, lesson planning, assessment and reflective teaching practice. This formal training complements my university teaching experience and explicitly connects it to Swiss Gymnasium education.
